Skills Troubleshooting
Fix common issues with skills not working, agents not using the right skills, and permission problems.
If a skill isn't working the way you expect, here are the most common issues and how to resolve them.
Skill not producing the right output
If the AI is using a skill but the results don't match your expectations:
- Review the instructions — Open the skill and read through the instructions carefully. Vague or ambiguous wording is the most common cause of inconsistent results.
- Add examples — Including a concrete example of the expected output in your instructions helps the AI understand exactly what you want.
- Be more specific — Instead of "write a summary," try "write a 3-bullet summary covering the problem, solution, and next steps."
Agent not using a skill
If an agent should be using a skill but isn't:
- Check assignment — Verify the skill is actually assigned to the agent. Open the agent's settings and confirm the skill appears in its skill list.
- Check the description — The AI reads the skill's description to decide when to use it. If the description doesn't match the type of request you're making, the AI may not recognize it's relevant.
- Check if it's enabled — A disabled skill won't be used even if it's assigned. Make sure the skill's status is set to enabled.
Permission issues
If you can't create, edit, or assign skills:
- Check your role — Creating and managing organization skills may require admin or editor permissions. Talk to your workspace admin if you need access.
- Check the scope — Agent-specific skills can only be managed by people with access to that agent's settings.
If you delete a skill that an agent depends on, the agent will lose that capability immediately. Always check which agents are using a skill before removing it.
