Edit a copied skill

Customize a skill you copied into your private library.

Intermediate · ~10 min · Prerequisites: a skill in Mine

What you'll do

Open a skill from your Mine tab, edit its instructions, save your version, and verify the change with the assistant.

Open it from Mine

Click Library in the sidebar, then switch to the Mine tab. Every skill you've copied lands here. Find the skill you want to adjust — use the search box if you have several.

Click the skill card to open it. You'll see the name, description, and the instructions that control how it behaves.

Edit the instructions

The instructions field is the core of a skill. It tells the assistant (or an agent) exactly what to do when that skill is invoked — the goal, the tone, the steps, any constraints.

Make your changes: tighten the scope, add a constraint, adjust the phrasing, or change how results are formatted. Your edits live in your copy only — they don't touch the original Built-in or Organization version.

For a full breakdown of what the instructions field does and what you can put in it, see Managing skills.

Save your version

When you're happy with the change, save it. Your updated skill stays in Mine under the same name. No one else sees your version; if a teammate copied the same built-in skill, their copy is unaffected.

If you want to go back, the original is still in the Built-in or Organization tab — you can copy it again and start fresh.

Test it

The fastest way to confirm your edit works is to open the assistant and invoke the skill. Watch whether the assistant behavior matches what you intended. If something's off, go back to Mine, refine the instructions, and re-test.

Your copy of a skill is independent. Editing it does not affect the original or anyone else's copy. If the original gets updated, your copy does not automatically inherit those changes.
